Planting the Seeds - Taste of working life for students

Is there a Doctor in the building?........... No, there are 3!

Priyanka Suresh, Daniel Henderson and DoctorsNaresh Rajasekar, who are all 18, all gained excellent grades to ensure they were able to pursue their dream. Priyanka gained A grades in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics to win her a place at Newcastle University. Daniel also achieved straight A grades and a distinction in the Advanced Extension Award in Chemistry to confirm his place at Manchester. Naresh scored A grades across the board to gain a place at Leeds University.

Dr Martine Crilley, Head of Sixth Form at English Martyrs said “We are immensely proud of the students. To have one student win a place to study medicine would be an achievement, as the competition for places is very strong, but to have 3 from the same year group is very special. Their hard work and determination is a credit to them and also a credit to our hardworking and dedicated staff that helped them to pursue their goal”.

English Martyrs continues to establish itself as a popular choice for students in Hartlepool who are serious about going onto University or gaining more qualifications to pursue a career. Mr David Riddle, Head of Year 13 said “We achieved record results this year with our A-B pass rate of 55%, and our average points score of over 818. We now have record numbers of students enrolled in our college, coming from 9 different schools across the Tees Valley area who are hoping to follow in the footsteps of students like Priyanka, Daniel and Naresh.  We wish the 3 future doctors and all our students who are heading off to university every success in the future”.

Big Apple beckons for brilliant student

A Hartlepool student is celebrating after winning a place on a trip to New York to further her future career. Charanya Ravi from The English Martyrs Sixth Form College is one of only 6 students nationally to be selected to go to New York City to studying engineering techniques with the Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust Engineering Experience.

Charanya, who is studying chemistry, physics, maths and further maths at A-Level won a place on the trip after some brilliant work helping to design and build a thermostatic temperature gauge for a local waste disposal company SITA. Her work with the ‘Engineering in Education’ scheme demonstrated to the judges just how committed, dedicated and skilled she was in the field of engineering. Charanya said ‘I’m really pleased to be selected to go to New York, It’ll be an amazing experience’. Dr Martine Crilley, Head of Sixth Form at English Martyrs, said ‘We’re delighted with Charanya, she’s worked very hard on her engineering projects as well as her academic studies and she deserves her reward’.

Charanya will now be applying to Cambridge University to study engineering. Beverley Scaife, learning mentor at English Martyrs said ‘I work closely with our students to help ensure they reach their full academic potential, I’m really pleased for Charanya. Next week I’m heading to Cambridge with a team from the Hartlepool Local Education Authority. We’re taking 40 students from across the town who gained the best GCSE results in the area to see the University. 23 of the 40 students going are studying at English Martyrs. Hopefully they’ll be inspired and follow the example set by Charanya’.
